Description
When it comes to engine efficiency, simple is better. One of the best examples of this is the serpentine belt, invented in 1979. Most new cars now use a single, flat serpentine belt instead of multiple V-belts to drive accessories such as the water pump, alternator, power steering pump and air conditioning compressor. It's called a serpentine belt because of the way it snakes around the pulleys. With a spring-loaded tensioner to keep the belt taut, the accessories don't need to pivot. This allows them to be mounted solidly producing less vibration. Rear wheel horsepower and gas mileage improve since the serpentine belt has little drag compared to the V-belts and it lasts up to 50% longer.
